Going Organic - second part of the topic Clean Eating 101: What it means to eat clean
Today's post is a continuation of
Today you can go into just about any grocery store and find organic produce and other food items. Buying organic foods does offer health benefits, but do we really know what the label "organic" means? I have found it quite confusing so together let's see if we can't get a better understanding here.
Food that is labeled "organic" is certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). To use that label the food must have been produced by processes that don't use synthetic fertilizers, irradiation, sewage sludge and genetic engineering - GMO (an important aspect we'll talk about in another post). If produce is not clearly labeled "organic" look for a PLU (price look-up) code that begins with the number "9" which identifies that food as organic.
Buying organic foods helps limit our intake of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, and other harmful chemicals. By limiting our intake of these substances we place significantly less stress on our detoxification and immune systems which are already challenged by environmental toxins that we can do little about.
I've seen some foods labeled "100% Organic" and some that say "Contains Organic Ingredients" (or something to that effect). What's that all about?
"100% Organic" refers to food that was produced without using synthetic pesticides, petroleum, or sewage/sludge based fertilizers, ionizing radiation (irradiation), or bioengineering as mentioned above.
Choosing meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products with this distinction means the animal was fed 100% organic feed and given no unnecessary antibiotics or growth hormones. For other foods it means that at least 95% of the ingredients are organically produced and the food does not contain sulfites (a substance that can be dangerous to those sensitive to it).
"Made with organic ingredients" means at least 70% of that foods ingredients are organic.
There are other voluntary labels that can be used, but I think we've got a lot to digest here already so I'll save that info for another time.
Before we go though I've got one last thing to share on this topic. When I first started looking to purchase organic produce I experienced sticker shock. It can be very expensive and if you're trying to feed a family it can be prohibitive.
One way to deal with this is to refer to the Environmental Working Group's
Hopefully you can now begin to see why choosing organic will be good for you, and for your family's health, and hopefully you have a better understanding of what "organic" means.

One way to deal with this is to refer to the Environmental Working Group's
lists called the Clean Fifteen and the Dirty Dozen. These lists identify produce that have the highest concentration of harmful substances (Dirty Dozen) and the least (Clean Fifteen) so you can choose some non-organic if you're trying to save money. Here's the link to their site: www.ewg.org.

Prima Marketing Finnabair Acrylic Paint Demo by Djana Venolia
Oi pessoal,
Greetings!
Let's take a look on the new Acrylic Paint by Finnabair for Prima Marketing.
These new paints, beside being acrylic they can be used with a dry brush or as a watercolor wash. You can apply in any porous surface: paper, ceramic, wood, etc. Their coverage is phenomenal. One layer is enough to cover the background.
These paints has a high level of pigments and they have a great shimmer finish. One of the sets, called Opal has a characteristic of having two colors and they will change and display one color depending on the angle you look. Take a close look on the bird, flower and leave on the left. Incredible, right?
We have a short video showing all the cool possibilities with this new paint:

Marble effect with Mist and Airbrush Medium by Djana Venolia
Oi pessoal,
Hoje estamos trazendo uma técnica nova para vocês: Efeito Marmorizado.
Greetings!
Today we will show how to create a marble effect using spray mist and airbrush medium on laminated wood pieces.
You will find a list of supplies at the end of this post.
You can leave your pieces to air dry or you can speed up the process using a heat tool. If you decide to do that, be aware that bobbles might show on your tile, which is quite cool texture and effect in my opinion.
One suggestion while choosing your colors: select colors from opposite sides of the spectrum. The orange and green I decided to leave alone and air dry.
The original piece:
Blue and silver tile.
Now you can watch the video showing how to use it:

Clean Eating 101: What it means to eat clean.
Clean Eating 101
I was standing in line one day at Trader Joe's to pay for my groceries when I overheard the woman in line in front of me say to the cashier that she and her husband were going to begin Clean Eating in a few days. She said she didn't know what that meant, but if she didn't have to give up her coffee she was ok with it.
I chuckled but later wondered how many others really don't know what "Clean Eating" is. I've since discovered that there are a lot of people who don't understand what it might be. So I thought I'd take a few posts to bring this healthy lifestyle to light.
My goal is to keep this as simple and basic as possible. I'd like this to be accessible for you and your family.
So here goes...in a nutshell Clean Eating is consuming foods as close to their natural state as possible. Yes, it's really that simple.
Eating fresh produce is the best way to obtain the nutrients that will support our bodies and give us the greatest health benefits. However, much of conventionally grown produce is full of toxic chemicals from pesticides,

Eating fresh produce is the best way to obtain the nutrients that will support our bodies and give us the greatest health benefits. However, much of conventionally grown produce is full of toxic chemicals from pesticides,
and/or has been genetically modified (GMO) both of which have potential harmful effects on our bodies.
The risks of consuming toxic foods include disruption of our nervous and endocrine systems, and increased risk of cancer. Disruption of our nervous and endocrine systems can lead to a number of different conditions such as pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, reproductive disorders, thyroid malfunction, and Alzheimer's disease to name a few.
There are a number of different aspects to Clean Eating. To keep this as simple as possible I'll address each of them individually. In our next installment we'll talk about choosing organic foods so we can truly reap the benefits of the foods we eat. I'll also address how to make that more affordable.
